The problem is a default (justifiable?) position of paranoia. While I know that this argument doesn’t necessarily apply to all of the information you’re talking about (which is already available in less convenient form), I think that Rick’s comment addresses the portion I’m not talking about. In general, some people don’t want their information online for fear of easy persecution. The possible ability of a new totalitarian government being able to easily find all hand gun owners, people of a particular religious background, or people with genetic predispositions to toward certain medical problems worries people. However, with the amount of information already available online, it’s probably a little too late for many of those concerns…

I don't think pure privacy is the issue. The big problem I have with making all information available online is the lack of a verifiable paper trail.

Put short, if someone wants my information, I want them to show identification, fill out a form, and give it to someone before they get my information. In that way, I can see afterwards who was accessing my information.

To me, the point of making someone go down to the county courthouse isn't to make it "hard". Its to make the request more easily traceable. There are security cameras down there. Policemen. There are humans.

Personally, I wish that if someone requested information pertaining to me that I be notified. Only fair, I think.
