"That is, to me, the fact that there are no moral truths is an inescapable truth, regardless of the consequences."

But saying there are no moral truths or falsities is like saying the term "moral truth" has no meaning. In my opinion, an examination of the usage of moral terms reveals that they are meaningful (despite some confusion and ambiguity).

[In converting from blogger to WordPress, I lost two of Lunt's comments:]

[first] (with sincere debate tone) I always find it perplexing when a nihilist uses rationale and reason as a prescription for living. To me, it seems to exhibit an obvious contradiction in actually practicing a nihilistic philosophy, but that’s the “never lose a moral debate” beauty of being a nihilist. I would be interested to see a future post on your blog about why one needs a philosophy (from your point of view) and how being a nihilist fulfils that need.

[second] p.s. I'm with you on less government interference and fewer crap laws. ...just wanting to have some philosophical fun. ;-)

The lack of ultimate truth doesn't preclude me being empathetic towards others and their unfulfilled desires. (This is one of those points where Hitler usually pops in for an eye-rolling visit.) And it certainly doesn't mean I can't think other people's thoughts or the resulting laws are dumb.

More importantly, you're absolutly right: caring about same-sex marriage laws is silly in an a-moral world. Which is one of my major beefs against the anti-dude-on-dude people: it's a waste of government time to think about these issues to the degree that we do. I don't even think there's a reason for the government to be involved in marriage at all, let along saying who can and cannot get married.

So, in a world without moral truths, why would one care about a same sex marriage law when it doesn't really prevent them from "going on living life"?

Funny thing: When I was getting my degree in philosophy at UT, I had a series of informal on-line debates (via bulletin board systems) with Mike Godwin, who was then editor of the university newspaper, the Daily Texan. I don't think either one of us ever brought up Nazis or Hitler in our debates. Most of our debates were over Popper and Carnap.
