Camaron Diablos

I live up in “North-Central” Austin, so I don’t get down to Polvo’s too much. When I do, I’m always pleased.

Kim and I went down there today for a late lunch and the place was packed. Normally, there’s ample outside seating, but as it’s in the 40′s today, all the Austinites huddled inside, making Polvo’s tiny inside cramped. Nonetheless, we got to sit down at a nice booth.

My favorite dish at Polvo’s by far is the one pictured above: the Camaron Diablos, or “Devil Shrimp.” There’s four or five shrimp in a pool of creamy red sauce that’s spiced up with two types of peppers (that I could tell). The cucumbers and tomatoes go well with the spicy sauce and act as a good chips too to scoop up the stuff.

Polvo’s is also nice, of course, because if it’s salsa-bar. They have 3 types of salsa (red, black, and green) and then that picked carrot, onion, and jalapeno thing that’s tasty. They charge you $1.75 for chips and salsa, which is high-robbery in these parts (anything but free is just as bad as having to pay for drink refills in the States), but there’s always something, no matter how great the place is.

Left 4 Dead

Playing Left 4 Dead

Charles was nice enough to send one of his extra XBoxes along to me and I ordered up a copy of Left 4 Dead
in anticipation of that. I’ve never been a huge video game fan – though I do love the Grand Theft Auto series. Zombies, however, are a favorite of mine.

The game play is fun enough – it’s just a first person shooter, really. What’s really pretty good, though, is the Zombie-craft, if you will, in the game. The zombies act like what you’d expect. Granted, they’re fast zombies, which is sort of non-cannon for me. But, if you had slow zombies in the game, it’d have to be a puzzle game (figure out how to get past a horde of zombies) rather than a first person shooter.

I’ve yet to play with actual humans, but I can see that it’d be pretty fun. Charles has a copy of the game in mail (I traded the game for the XBox), so we’ll see soon.

Maker's Mark Wrapping Paper

Maker's Mark Wrapping Paper

I, dear readers, am what they call a Maker’s Mark Ambassador. As part of that, I just got a little Maker’s Mark wrapping paper set in the mail: wrapping paper, ribbon, and gift tags. See more photos here.

Hot damn!

The paper is made up of Christmas-y snow-flakes made up of bottles of my mainstay bourbon (yeah, guess which one it is!) and the labels are little bottles too. The idea, you’d guess, would be to use it to wrap bottles of Maker’s to give out to people, which I’m sure I’ll do as my annual gift of booze to my dad (on his birthday too). Sadly, there’s nothing drinkable in the tube, but it looks handy none-the-less.

Sidebar: one of the best, easiest gift you can give a man (and some women) is simply a bottle of nice booze. It doesn’t have to be mind-blowing expensive, it can even be Wild Turkey trash-chic. But if you’re in a pinch, most men will smile when they open it.

Back to this lofty “Ambassador” thing. If you want me to nominate you, email me your name and address and I’ll sign up you. I have Kuldip Oberoi to thank for my nomination – thanks! Of course, you can just do it yourself if you prefer the Coté run-around. I’ve already signed up several people, and with little freebies like the wrapping paper set, if you like the product, why the hell not?

Recorded October 29, 2008. Michael has just arrived in Marathon, TX where Kim will be staying for a month. They discuss, among other things, his drive, Obama’s “infomercial” and the Annual Chili Cookoff in Terlingua, TX. Oh yeah, and there’s a skunk sighting.
