VCs vs PE and other tales – Back of the Envelope #10

I’ve been curious about the difference between venture capitalists (VCs) and private equity firms (PE). Granted, as Ed schools me, both are types of PE, but we don’t call the PE people “LBO’s” any more after that patchy spot a decade plus ago. Anyhow, among other things, Ed and I talk about how VCs investment profile and desires differ from PE folks.

More about hard drives than you ever wanted to know – Back of the Envelope #009

Hard drives consume a large part of this episode, but it’s a great discussion of how you look at the business of hard drives. We also talk to the integrated vs. modular approach as a frame for iOS vs. XBox.

If you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you – Back of the Envelope Podcast #006

Ed and I are back to recording in this episode. I finally get someone to explain why we care about Europe tanking and then we talk about my angst over Microsoft. The recording cut out before we could talk about the Thai floods – hopefully my equipment will work next time.

Extra gravy for your ear-biscuits

Every now-and-then, I record something whacky or just “ambient.” I sometimes find it calming to hear little recordings of people just walking around or hanging out.

Long ago, I put together a little podcast feed called “gravy” to put this kind of stuff and other things in. Here’s the feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/gravy. Subscribe to it if you like that kind of stuff. It’ll be linked over in the sidebar if you want to check back.

I’ve got some stuff from Kim and I’s last trip (Thailand) to fit in there once I get libsyn to behave. In the meantime, there’s some downtown Austin sounds like hanging out on a nice day at a coffee shop, going to the trail of (Christmas) lights, and walking in the early evening in downtown Phoenix (while at SAP TechEd 2009).

Like I said: smoke ‘em if you got ‘em.

Voting, Texas-style – Austin’s Very Own #51

Going to Vote

After voting in the Texas Primaries, Kim and I discuss the fun of the voting process. A loud motor-scooter goes by and launches us into a conversation of impolite noises.

To listen to the episode, subscribe to the podcast feed in iTunes or whatever, download the episode directly, or click play above to listen right now.

Kim does a good job sussing out my noise problems. Also, we talk about Kim’s Chicken Cordon Bleu adventures.
